A resident at Thornfield Care Home in Seaton has enjoyed the return of the home's summer swimming club, discovering greater freedom of movement and renewed confidence in the warm water at Flamingo Pool in Axminster.
Paul Barrett, 76, has lived at Thornfield since January 2025. He recently attended his first hydrotherapy session of the year, where the warmth and buoyancy of the water helped him relax and move more comfortably than he can on land.
The weekly swimming sessions were first introduced several years ago following a recommendation from physiotherapist Sophie Tiller, who recognised the potential benefits for residents' mobility and wellbeing. Care Assistant Alan Knight organised the sessions for around two years before they paused over the winter. Now, with the warmer weather returning, the club is back, giving residents another opportunity to enjoy gentle exercise and time in the water.
Helping Paul Feel More Confident in the Water
During his first session of the summer, Paul, a former builder, carefully entered the pool with support from Alan. Although initially unsure about leaning back and floating, he gradually relaxed and became more comfortable as the session continued.
The water helped reduce pressure on his joints and muscles, allowing him to move more freely. Staff were pleased to see Paul grow in confidence and enjoy the experience.
Alan Knight, Care Assistant at Thornfield Care Home, said:
"It's wonderful to see residents enjoying activities they may have thought were no longer possible. The hydrotherapy sessions allow people to move more freely, build confidence and simply enjoy themselves. Watching Paul relax and smile in the water reminded us why these sessions are so worthwhile."
Paul's wife, Yvonne Barrett, also attended the session and was delighted to see him enjoy the experience.
"Paul has never been able to swim. It was absolutely wonderful that he had the opportunity to use a hydro pool, and he enjoyed it so much, as can be seen by his face!"

Keeping Residents Active and Involved
The swimming club reflects Thornfield Care Home's commitment to helping residents continue enjoying activities and experiences that support their wellbeing, even when their health or mobility changes.
For Paul, the session provided an opportunity to enjoy the water in a supportive environment, with staff alongside him to offer reassurance and encouragement.
Tabitha Donovan, Home Manager at Thornfield Care Home, said:
"Our aim is to ensure residents can continue taking part in hobbies and activities they love, regardless of their physical abilities. Hydrotherapy has been a fantastic way of improving wellbeing while giving residents something to look forward to each week."
The home plans to continue the weekly swimming sessions throughout the summer, giving more residents the opportunity to enjoy time in the water and experience the benefits of taking part in an activity suited to their needs.
At Thornfield, supporting residents to remain active, enjoy their interests and try new experiences is an important part of everyday life.
