Our Care Approach

At Thornfield Care Home, care is always centred around the individual. The team understands that moving into care is a significant life transition, so every effort is made to ensure residents feel comfortable from the very beginning.

Residents are supported not only with their physical health but also with emotional wellbeing, social engagement and daily enjoyment. We time to build meaningful relationships with residents, learning about their interests, life experiences and personal routines. This allows care to be delivered with empathy, respect and consistency.

Communal areas throughout the home create opportunities for social interaction and relaxation, while quiet spaces offer privacy whenever residents need it. Activities, hobbies and outings help residents remain active and connected with the world around them, supporting both mental and emotional wellbeing.

From Exeter: Take the A376/A3052 east through Topsham and Ottery St Mary towards Seaton. The journey is about 36 miles and typically takes around 40 minutes in normal traffic. (For example, Google Maps shows Exeter St Davids to Seaton is ~23.6 miles, 39 min by car)

From Honiton: Follow the A35 west from Honiton towards Seaton. This is a much shorter trip, roughly 12 miles and about 20 minutes’ driving.

From Axminster: Head east on the A35 via Seaton Tramway. Axminster is only about 7–8 miles away, roughly a 15-minute drive.

We recommend checking live traffic or navigation apps (like Google Maps) for the latest routes and times. Parking is free on-street.

Axminster Station: This station is on Great Western Railway’s main line between Exeter and London. It’s about 7 miles from Thornfield. Trains from Exeter St Davids to Axminster take roughly 40 minutes (hourly service). From Axminster station, you can catch the local AVMT bus (route 885) to Seaton (about 20 minutes) or take a short taxi ride to the home.

Honiton Station: Also on the Exeter-London line, Honiton Station is about 12 miles (20 min) from the home. Trains from Exeter take roughly the same time as to Axminster. From Honiton, you can catch Stagecoach route 20 to Seaton (the bus journey is about 43 minutes) or use a taxi to reach the home directly.

Both stations are well-served, with frequent trains. Once you arrive by train, if you need assistance or a lift, feel free to call us – we’re happy to meet visiting family at the station or help arrange a taxi.

From Exeter: Stagecoach Route 9A runs hourly from Exeter Bus Station (Stand 9) to Seaton Sea Front. This coastal bus takes about 1½ hours. Get off at Seaton Sea Front or the Tramway Station stop, the home is only a few minutes’ walk from either.

From Honiton/Taunton: Stagecoach Route 20 connects Honiton (via Taunton and Hemyock) with Seaton a few times a day. The direct Honiton to Seaton trip is roughly 40–45 minutes to the Seaton Sea Front stop or the Opposite Townsend House Surgery stop on Manor Road (both within easy walking distance of the home).

From Axminster: The AVMT (Axe Valley) Route 885 shuttle runs between Axminster and Seaton/Beer. It calls at Axminster rail station and then drops off at Seaton Sea Front and Tramway. The bus from Axminster to Seaton takes only about 20 minutes.

All these buses stop very close to Thornfield. For example, the Seaton Sea Front stop (Marine Parade) is just downhill from Fore Street and the Tramway Station stop is at the foot of Fore Street, just a short walk away from the home. We recommend checking the latest timetables on the Stagecoach or AVMT websites for up-to-date service information.
