VE Day – Celebrating 80 Years with Joy and Remembrance

There was a wonderful sense of togetherness in the air as residents and staff at Thornfield came together to mark 80 years since VE Day with a vibrant street party celebration. The garden was transformed with classic bunting, handmade decorations and the sounds of wartime favourites, as everyone gathered to honour this important milestone in our shared history.
The celebration, held in true 1940s style, brought with it an afternoon of delicious homemade cakes, cheerful sing-alongs and joyful conversation. Emily Miller is a regular favourite entertainer at our home, and she had toes tapping and memories flowing during her performance. Her nostalgic renditions of wartime tunes created a truly authentic atmosphere, sparking smiles and even a few dances along the way.
For many of our residents, VE Day is not just a historical date but a deeply personal memory. Coming together in this way allowed those stories to be shared once more, with reminiscence playing a key part in the afternoon’s mood. From remembering the sound of air raid sirens to recounting where they were when the war ended, the celebration gave space for those important reflections, while bringing our community closer together.

The benefits of events like this are felt well beyond the day itself. Shared experiences such as music and home-cooked food help to build bonds between residents and staff, offering comfort, connection and a real sense of belonging. It was heartening to see so many smiles, gentle conversations and spontaneous songs fill the home with warmth.
Celebrating the 80th anniversary of VE Day in this way reminded us all not only of the strength and resilience of those who lived through the war, but also of the strength of our community today. The care, companionship and joy shared each day is what makes Thornfield feel like home.
